However, there are some secrets that some wedding DJs may not want you to know (we won’t name any names, haha). In this blog post, we’ll share 5 of them!
They might not have wedding experience
One of the secrets that wedding DJs don’t want you to know is that they may not have a lot of experience doing actual weddings. They may know how to rock a nightclub with the latest EDM or Trap beats, but a wedding is a different beast entirely. A wedding has guests from all age groups, many of whom would object to loud rap music or techno beats.
A DJ that is just starting out with weddings can be a problem because they may not have the skills or knowledge to handle different situations that may arise during the wedding reception. A wedding has a certain “flow” which takes experience to understand.
To avoid this problem, it’s important to ask your wedding DJ about their experience and ask for references from past clients. You can also ask for a demo or sample of their work to get a better idea of their skills and style.
They may not have the music you want
Another secret that wedding DJs don’t want you to know is that they may not have the music you want. While most DJs have a wide selection of music, there may be some songs that they don’t have — especially if they are young and don’t remember the hits of the 60s, 70s and 80s which many wedding guests love. If you have a specific song or genre of music that you want to hear at your wedding reception, make sure you communicate this ahead of time.
Provide the DJ with a list of songs that you want to hear and make sure they are able to accommodate your requests. You can also ask if they are familiar with different genres of music to ensure that they can play a variety of songs that you and your guests will enjoy.
They may cheat
Some wedding DJs may cheat by using pre-recorded mixes during the reception. While this can save them time and make their job easier, it can also be a problem if the pre-recorded mix doesn’t match the energy of the crowd. It can also be a problem if there are technical difficulties with the pre-recorded mix and they cannot segue expertly to playing live.
To avoid this problem, it’s important to ask your wedding DJ if they use pre-recorded mixes or if they will be “spinning live.” Using custom playlists is totally fine — but having songs set in stone in a specific order rarely works at a wedding.

You can also ask if they are able to take requests from guests and how they handle unexpected changes.
They may not play nice with the photographer, videographer or caterer
Finally, one of the biggest secrets that wedding DJs don’t want you to know is that they might be difficult to work with, at least when it comes to other wedding professionals such as photographers, videographers or caterers.
Wedding DJs become part of a team the day of your reception, whether they anticipate this or not. That means they should coordinate with their fellow professionals to ensure everyone is on the same page. Wedding DJs are usually the ones that control the flow of the event, but must put their egos aside and remain flexible.
For example, if the DJ begins the father/daughter dance without informing the photographer–its not only the photographer who will be disappointed. So will you, as your precious, once-in-a-lifetime moment will not fully captured in photos.
